We recently had students from the University of Jo

We recently had students from the University of Johannesburg’s Department of Visual Arts participate in a body mapping workshop led by Prof. Alison Kearney, in collaboration with the CCAC curatorial team of the Constitutional Court Trust.
They were introduced to the methodology and various uses of body mapping. The workshop was held in the public art gallery of the Constitutional Court alongside the Long Life Body Maps by the Bambanani Women’s Group that are currently displayed in this area.
Inspired by the Long Life Body Maps, the students worked in pairs to create their own body maps which were then hung on the glass doors facing the Long Life drawings, consequently entering into dialogue with each other.
The students’ body maps were put on temporary display until the end of Human Rights Month.

As the first in a series of engagements that form

As the first in a series of engagements that form part of the development of a short educational guide to accompany the CCAC, the CCAC curatorial team and Prof. Alison Kearney hosted an educators workshop.
This is part of our activities over the next few years to mark 30 years of democracy (2024), 30 years of the CCAC (2025), and 30 years of the Constitution (2026). The educators from various disciplines in Gauteng were introduced to the Court environment and worked together to identify points of intersection between the National Curriculum (for the history, social studies, language and visual arts subjects) and artworks in the CCAC.

Artworks of the CCAC: Neo Ntsoma’s ‘Amsterdam Rainbow Dress’ (2018).
Series name: Amsterdam Rainbow Dress

This series of photographs resulted from a joint project between the Constitutional Court Trust, custodian of the CCAC, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in South Africa, to present and photograph the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress in front of the Constitutional Court in December 2018.

This dress is made from the flags of all countries in the world where homosexuality is illegal, which is changed to a rainbow flag when such legislation is changed. It aims to create awareness of the persecution of LGBTQIA+ people, and is a powerful example of how art can be used to champion the cause of justice and humanity.

South Africa’s Constitution guarantees dignity and equality and outlaws persecution based on sexual and gender identities. South Africa was the first African country to legalise same-sex marriage in 2006.
The dress was modelled by transgender activist and model Yaya Mavundla.
This artwork was donated by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands of South Africa in 2020 and is currently on public display.

Artworks of the CCAC: Willie Bester’s ‘Discussion’ (1994).

In this work by a renowned anti-apartheid artist, Willie Bester, two women converse, perhaps about their hopes for the future after South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994, the year the artwork was made. Their words float in the air in the artwork's background, while a queue of voters is also seen.
The work was woven by Marguerite Zulu, June Xaba and Talita Lependo of the Stephens Tapestry Studio.

This artwork was donated by Linda Givon from Goodman Gallery in 1997 and is currently on public display.

Artworks of the CCAC: Rose Shakinovsky’s ‘Ever

Artworks of the CCAC: Rose Shakinovsky’s ‘Every Three Minutes’ (2009).

This artwork is mostly made from little doll’s shoes, the poignant and chilling work refers to the often-reported yet speculative and debunked claim that a woman or child is raped every three minutes in South Africa, yet it highlights the country's extremely high level of sexual harassment and gender-based violence.

This artwork was donated by Goodman Gallery in 2011, and is currently on public display.
