On Saturday the 7th of December we will be hosting

On Saturday the 7th of December we will be hosting our last event for 2024 at the Constitutional Court. The Johannesburg premiere of the independently produced short film about the CCAC's formation and significance, Where Art Meets Justice (2024) directed by Mary Ann Braubach, will be presented at the Court following screenings in Kimberley and Durban as part of our travelling exhibition programming earlier this year.

For the first time, we will show the short conservation documentary Gaza: Lest We Forget (2024), produced by the CCAC curatorial team working with SummerTime Productions. In May 2024, the CCAC team, along with artist Prof. Pitika Ntuli and Dr. Isabelle McGinn accompanied by her MA students of the Tangible Heritage Conservation programme at the University of Pretoria, embarked on the intensive week-long restoration of Prof. Ntuli's sculpture Gaza: Lest We Forget (2015) installed in the public gallery of the Constitutional Court. Come see the documentary about this project and the unveiling of this poignant and timely artwork with Prof. Ntuli and Dr. McGinn and her students.

Join us this weekend for the closing of the CCAC travelling exhibition at @kznsagallery, Durban, with Justice Albie Sachs

FILM SCREENING AND TALK BY JUSTICE ALBIE SACHS
This Friday, 8 November, from 4:30pm - 6pm
There will be a screening of a short documentary about the CCAC, Where Art Meets Justice, recently completed by Mary Ann Braubach, with Justice Albie Sachs as one of the producers. The documentary features interviews with Justice Sachs and the late Justice Mokgoro, along with various artists represented in the CCAC: Kim Berman, Willie Bester, Willem Boshoff, Marlene Dumas, Hlengiwe Dube, David Goldblatt, William Kentridge, Adrian Kohler, Kagiso Pat Mautloa, Pitika Ntuli, and Sue Williamson. The screening will be followed with a talk by Justice Albie Sachs about his time at the Constitutional Court, the origins of the CCAC, and how art become woven into the story and symbolism of the Constitutional Court.

We’re sharing the winning artworks of the CCAC S

We’re sharing the winning artworks of the CCAC Student Competition of 2023 and 2024. The competition was launched by the @concourttrust in order to carry and communicate a sense of the Constitutional Court’s built environment (its architecture and integrated artworks) as the collection is exhibited in other spaces during the CCAC travelling exhibition. The initiative also promotes youth engagement with and representation in the CCAC.

Featured here: Manelisi Vilakazi’s ‘Soaked in bleach’ (2024). The work depicts Black imprisoned women shown at the Old Johannesburg Fort, today known as Constitution Hill. They are resisting apartheid by continuing with their everyday activities. The red washing line symbolises blood and violence, while the “Blue Dress” echoes Judith Mason’s famous artwork in the CCAC, and the brave resistance it stands for. It is contrasted with prison blankets, representing hardships within the prison walls. By washing, the women have come together in an act of cleansing and collective healing, looking to a better future.

Featured here: Mohau Moholane’s ‘Lekgotla’ (2024). Lekgotla is a Sesotho/Setswana term for a democratic forum used by communities to settle disputes, as is embodied in the concept of “justice under a tree”. The print shows wooden logs that form a gathering space, speaking to indigenous practices of collective responsibility and decision making through discourse. The chair arrangement symbolises individual voices and perspectives that converge within the communal space, each contributing to the collective narrative. The plastic chairs in the traditional court setting hints at how tradition merges with modern influences.

Featured here: Itumeleng Mtshali’s ‘Finding Peace, Mo Moriting’ (2024). The title “Mo moriting” means in the shade in Sesotho/Setswana. Mtshali portrays the sense of peace she experienced upon entering the Constitutional Court foyer that simulates a clearing in a forest. The work points to the calmness humans find in nature, but also to how the court stands as a haven for the protection of the rights of people and the environment. Mtshali’s particular experience of the Court highlights its accessibility and openness, built to be a place of connection.

Featured here: Khanyisa Brancon’s ‘Re ka se (kgone) go lebala tša nakong e fetilego’ (2024). The photograph is of A guard tower of the Old Johannesburg Fort. Which stands as a reminder of past atrocities. Standing on rampart walls, it still keeps silent watch, reminding passers-by of a past they might prefer to forget. Brancon’s work, titled in Sepedi, and can loosely be translated to “We cannot forget the things (traumas) of the past, comments on how the apartheid past has left lasting wounds. The work’s melancholic colouring is painfully evocative of the crimes of hatred committed at this prison site that was reformed to house the Constitutional Court.

The second work featured here is titled ‘Go ya pele, kgabo e fiša bokamoso bjo bo lego ka pele (ga)rena’ and the image depicts the Flame of Democracy, installed on Constitution Square facing the Constitutional Court, and serves as a memorial to the ongoing struggle in achieving South Africa’s constitutional ideals. The title, when loosely translated from Sepedi means “Going forward, the flame of justice burns its bright future ahead of us”, the work serves as a reflection on the difficulties we have surmounted, the strides we have made, and the work that remains.

Featured here: Bheki Anderson Sibiya’s ‘Umuz’osentabeni (The Light)’ (2023). The work was inspired by the environment of the Constitutional Court and the history of its site. A diverse African group gathers around Constitutional Hill and are overlooked by the towers of the precinct. The artist pays homage to the relentless African spirit, he says “from the fires of apartheid we rose, and we are a better tomorrow, today”.
